I am using the Matek M8Q-5883 GPS with compass. I have no problem with wiring and using the GPS without connecting the white (DA) and green (CL) wires (the compass feature).

However, now I would like to connect the compass if that is possible.I have searched the internet which only proved to be frustrating. GPS - Wiring the Compass on Matek M8Q-5883 | IntoFPV Forum (10)I only found a few diagrams showing how to connect these wires to corresponding DA-CL pads on the flight controller. So, here is the question: If the FC doesn't have DA-CL pads, can you use a freeset of TX-RX pads GPS - Wiring the Compass on Matek M8Q-5883 | IntoFPV Forum (11) (an open UART) ??

If this can be done, how do I set it up??

The flight controller that I am currently using is a JHEMCU GHF405AIO (25A) and it has several open TX-RX pads and UARTS. This FC has plenty of open pads/UARTS.

The SDA and SCL resources of an MCU are only usable byspecificMCU pins, which means you can remapthe SDA and SCL resources to those permitted pins as long as the pinsaren't already being used for something else. It's not as straight forward as both pins for a singleUART (theTX/RX pair) being mappable toa relatedSDA/SCL pair.

If you tell me thepads you're already using (maybe some photos will also help),I can then work out if any of the remaining pads can be mapped to arelatedSDA/SCL pair. It may not be possible but let's at leasttake a look.

I'm also assuming this is for Betaflight, because you can't do resource remapping in INAV.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, I am using Betaflight. For me it does pretty much everything that I need and I like that there is an abundance of knowledge, tutorials, videos, and help.

I have attached a photo of the FC and included the Betaflight "Ports" tab (from screen print).

My interpretation is that UART1 and UART2 are available {since I am not using Smartaudio, UART3 could be}.

So, what I really need to know is how to remap SDA and SCL to the TX and RX pads for UART2.

Oh yeah, which one goes to which pad {does SDA go to TX or RX}.

OK, so I've cross referenced all the pads on the board that are mapped to pins on the MCU withwhich of those pins share and are able to usean I2C resource. The only pads on theJHEMCU GHF405AIO flight controllerthat have that capability are the following:-

  • LED_STRIP -> Can be remapped toI2C1_SCL 1
  • SERIAL_TX 3 ->Can be remapped to I2C_SCL 2
  • SERIAL_RX 3 -> Can be remapped to I2C_SDA 2

Because you need a full I2C pair for your Matek M8Q-5883compass, that only leaves you with the option of remapping the UART3 pads. If you want to use SmartAudio / IRC Tramp control for your VTX you will need to use and configure UART1 or UART2 for that instead.

So what you need to do is to wire the SCL pad of the Matek M8Q-5883 to the TX3 pad on the FC, and wire the SDL pad to the RX3 pad. Then run the following block of commands in thecl*to remap those pads to I2C device #2 and enable the compass (magnetometer)...

There's no such thing as a "half i2c pair". One line is the clock and the other is the data. It can't do anything with either one of them
in isolation so there's no way to use i2c like a UART and run one wire with the communication alternating between receive and
transmit to create a single wire half duplex connection.

On the i2c bus, the clock signal is what tells the master or slave device that another bit of information has been put on the data line.
So, the clock line determines the timing of the signals. On a UART, the receiver and transmitter have to be set to the same speed
and their internal clocks define the timing of the data on the line.

You probably know this already but using the term "full pair" implies that it would be possible to use a "half pair" and that's just
not the case.

Yes, you are still good to go with the wiring I suggested whichmakes use of both the SDA and SCL data lines that arerequired for I2C communications to work. The CLI commands just remap the I2C data lineresources to the UART3 pads.

Ok, so now I think that I do want to use SmartAudio for the VTX.
Can I connect the wire to TX2 and just set that in Betaflight ?

Yes, as long as UART2 isn't currently beingused for anything else. You alsoneed to configure thatUART in thePorts tab for either SmartAudio or IRC Tramp depending on what protocol your VTX support. And then the VTX tables of course if you are on Betaflight 4.1.x or above.
