A psychologist friend of mine described the condition for police officers in terms of 'cumulative stress,' without a significant relief valve. I imagine officers carrying a burlap sack on their backs - with daily deposits of stress - and the tiniest of holes in the bottom, allowing some stress to leak out - but not enough to ever empty the bag. Having supportive organizations - and people around them - helps officers lighten this inescapable burden. If you know an officer - let them know you appreciate them; it will have a greater impact on them than you might think.

Many across the country are calling for police reform. The problem is - the proposed solutions are largely expansions of prior efforts that have not produced solid results. Check out this short article on a model that will be a game-changer. https://bit.ly/33cYHpz

"We need more cops!"Do patrol officers in your law enforcement agency complain about being short-staffed or too busy, or that they are constantly running from call to call? Does your agency struggle with backed-up calls for service or lengthyresponse times? Are patrol officers denied leave time or training opportunities because of staffing issues? If one or more of these conditions exist within your agency, it is possible that additional patrol staff are needed. However, what is just as likely — and perhaps even more so — is that an ineffectively designed patrol schedule is at least partially to blame. Please join me on September 11th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM as I host a webinar on effective patrol schedule design. In conducting operational assessments of police agencies large and small all around the country, I find that many departments are not taking full advantage of the technology solutions available to them that could improve the efficiency of their delivery of services to the community. I will be addressing this topic in a workshop presentation at the IACP Technology Conference in May. During that workshop, I will provide attendees with a free technology self-assessment tool, which they can use to help determine how well they are engaging technology in their patrol service delivery. If you are interested in attending the workshop, I have posted the information below. Title: Leveraging the Power ofTechnology to Increase Agency EfficiencyDay: Tuesday, May 21Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PMRoom 101techconference@theiacp.org If you are unable to attend the workshop, but you would like to get a copy of the technology self-assessment tool, send me a note and we can connect.
